Gonçalo Frutuoso

Associate Software Developer · Lisbon, Portugal

I build software with a bias toward systems that need to be fast, dependable, and understandable.

I work at Sky on the Apple TV ecosystem. I am also finishing an M.Sc. in Computer Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico and doing research with INESC-ID on scalable exploration and visualization of large phylogenetic trees and networks.

Experience

Sky Associate Software Developer

Developing and maintaining features for Sky's Apple TV application using Swift and SwiftUI, while contributing to test automation and CI/CD workflows in a large-scale production streaming platform.

INESC-ID Research Assistant

Researching scalable exploration and visualization of large phylogenetic structures. Developing PhyloLens and contributing to PhyloLib, with work spanning graph visualization, algorithms, level of detail, and performance.

Sky Software Developer Apprentice

Worked on the Apple TV ecosystem with Swift and contributed to Jenkins and Groovy CI/CD pipelines before later returning to Sky full-time.

Universidade Lusófona Programmer

Developed a Python desktop application for acquiring and managing data from a material tension-testing machine.

Selected work

PhyloLens

2025—2026

Interactive exploration of large phylogenetic trees and graphs. The system combines hierarchical level of detail, semantic zoom, viewport-based data selection, server-side graph processing, and scalable layouts to keep datasets with hundreds of thousands of profiles practical to explore.

distributed systems

A distributed computation platform with adaptive workload scheduling, automatic EC2 scaling, workload prediction, and bytecode instrumentation for transparent runtime metrics.

Java · AWS EC2 · DynamoDB · Javassist

PhyloLib - phylogenetic algorithms

2025—2026

A Java library for phylogenetic analysis and graph construction, providing reusable implementations of multiple tree-building and network algorithms. My work includes algorithm integration, build automation, testing, and API documentation.

About

I am particularly interested in distributed systems, backend engineering, algorithms, performance, developer tooling, and graph-heavy problems. I prefer simple systems, explicit trade-offs, and code that can be understood without archaeology.

Outside computers, I box, skimboard, run, and spend too much time around motorcycles and old cars.
